Awhile back I made a myspace for my father's band from 1967. It was a record that a grew up listening to a lot when I first got a record player in Junior High or High School. Grand Trine have been covering it and playing it live lately so we thought we would quickly record a version ourselves and post it. The singer of the band would go on to form The Haunted who you might know from The Pebbles comps or The Gruesomes cover etc. Enjoy.

Thanks to everyone who pre-ordered our new Sunglasses 12" EP. Between all the people, record stores, distros who picked it up we have only 275 copies remaining from the original press of 600. This is great because the official release isn't even til Friday. We are always working on a special release show in MTL for April 16th which we have a few reserved copies saved for.

We actually just got our personal copies a few minutes ago, and most people who pre-ordered should be getting them soon.

We had another bloody one last week and released our split single 7" with Black Feelings. Not exactly sure how it can be purchased online yet or if it is in any stores. We'll have a few kicking around.

In other news, we are going on tour! Weirdcanada.com is doing a traveling WYRD fest (pronounced Weird fest) so we are headed out to Calgary, Edmonton and Lethbridge at the start of May. We will play some shows a long the way. Super excited because Cosmetics are playing all the shows. If you haven't picked up their new 7inch on Captured Tracks. Do it. We have been talking about touring with them before either of our bands had ever played a single gig so this is really cool.

We have some videos and things that will pop up in the next few weeks. And also a new bandcamp page. Hopefully band camp de-thrones myspace. It is the same thing but without ads. The Peelies convinced us of it's worth. They are usually a step ahead. That's why we have a blogspot and they have a tumblr. This is possibly the lamest thing I have ever typed.

Uh, what else... we are remixing a Homosexual Cops song and it sounds exactly like New Order. Probably our finest work. I have had nothing to do with it so far. But I like the results.

Loft party aftermath..

Haven't really been able to move or anything since the loft party a few weeks ago. Huge success. We had to shut the doors after the first 300 people showed up and everyone locked inside was beyond wasted. I don't usually drink before we play but at some point I remember smashing a bottle and slashing my chest repeatedly til I was covered in blood. I guess nerds who like Iggy Pop shouldn't get drunk before playing sets - this will not be a common occurrence. The whole night was great. An explosive Homocops set as usual. And they did some now legendary things in the VIP room which I won't get into. The Peelies were great too. They insisted all the members of all the bands shotgun coldshots before they started and they had a homemade grand trine teeshirt and junk. Definitely one of the most fun new bands in Montreal. Apparently while we played people were rushing to merch table covered in blood asking where the nearest hospital was. The whole night was insane. We'll definitely throw another party sometime in the next few months with another secret location.

Z Fairbrother and Emily and I silk-screened some toxic vomit colored poster and shirts for the show as mentos (the gig poster was also blown up to 18ft if anyone noticed it hanging from the ceiling). We have a few left if anyone wants to buy the leftovers. Each one is different.

We should have them at the Blue Skies Anniversary show on Feb 27th @ Il Motore. It is our 7" release party and it's pay what you can/free.

last night in O-town was so much fun. Holy Cobras ruled. We were fed a really good curry. The turnout was great. The encore is posted above.. the bass was completely destroyed by this point. we drove home immediately following the set and Raf caught a plane to Mexico at 5am.

400 people confirmed to attend the show at the end of the month with The Peelies and Homosexual cops (and 300 maybes). The place holds about 250 max so get there early.

New track from the next 12inch was posted on myspace a few days ago and the pre-order starts any day. The first 100 pre orders get the last copies of the Be Bad + Attack Mode 7inch that Divorce put out in 2006. Check divorcerecords.ca for details.

So we've been hard at work. Looks like we will have the 12" and 7" out at the same time. We ended up re-mixing the CKUT sessions ourselves and added in some jamming we were doing at 4am at Rafs place. I had to work the next morning but it was fun. The results of our re-mixed CKUT session are a way way far out version of R.F.I.D. We are slowly just assembling what we need to D.I.Ourselves (again) and I am excited to get back to home recording. We are just going try to deck out the HQ in 2010.

We are throwing a huge party on January 29th. Originally it was going to be the album release (delayed) but we figure we don't need an excuse to throw a party. Location: Torn Curtain Loft Bands: Grand Trine, The Peelies, The Homosexual Cops Djs: Annie Q & Emily B. B: BYOB. More details coming soon.

I just heard the master of the Black Feelings/Grand Trine split 7". Sounds great. Color vinyl. MP3 download code included. 500 copies. Silkscreened artwork. Should be neat.

It's no secret that Weird Canada is one of my favorite websites around. Definitely the best new blog of 2009. It has all the keys for success: content, simplicity and focus. Zach interviewed me and originally when we did the interview it was going to be for his blog Avant-Lard (also good), but after he pitched it to Weird Canada and they were into posting it. I am in ultra windbag ramble mode and my brain is picked clean.

We are heading back into the studio this weekend to record tracks for our split 7" with Black Feelings (will be released at Il Motore with Red Rockets Glare Feb 26th). We are going to record some extra tracks and maybe they will be released if someone wants to commit them to wax in the new year.

Pre-orders for the 12" go up next week and we'll post a new track and get rid of the old ones and all that jazz.

Also "Monochromatic Youth" is going to be used in a trailer for a post-apocalyptic love story that was shot in Halifax. I'll post that if I see it.

The next show we play will be our 12" EP release party on January 29th w/ our two favorite brand new local bands The Homosexual Cops, The Peelies at a venue TBA. It has been a long week after our artwork for the 12" was rejected by the label (that is why it has disappeared from the internet). I guess it was too offensive and they were worried about the fact it was a collage. Oh well. We also recorded an extra new song to be included on the 12" so maybe the delays have been a positive thing.

In February we are going to be releasing a split 7" with Black Feelings on Blue Skies Turn Black. They are doing a 1-off release for the label because it is the 10th anniversary. But they are not re-starting the label. It is just sort of a special/fun thing to do. The release show will be at Sala was reunited bands from BSTB's past.

And it looks like we are headed to Austin, TX in March for SXSW.

The Jesus Lizard show = Awesome.

I can't even begin to describe how much fun this show was! I am still trying to take it all in. They are the greatest band and the nicest guys in the world. We took lots of video, and filmed some of their set from the side of the stage which I will post in the next few days. The whole night was perfect. No complaints at all! Just totally unforgettable and fun. The crowd was great. The venue was great. The sound was great. The Jesus Lizard were great. David Yow kept calling our band "Grand Treen" but we couldn't even correct him because we were just happy he was talking to us at all. Ha. They basically turned our dressing room into their smoking room. And we gave them cigarettes in exchange for beer. This was basically the best show of all time.

1st here is a great video of Dead Wife from the secret show we played together in the Murder House basement. They were in rare form both nights.

And just a couple of seconds of this one too. These last two and the Dead Wife vid were shot by Matt Elliot. The rest were from Derrick Hiltz of ECT.

Weekend Recap: Dead Wife are the best. We love touring with them. When we got to Halifax the club owner wouldn't except Shub's 2 valid I.Ds so he took him out back to check his Facebook account before letting him stay to play the gig. I broke Raf's bass which I was borrowing during the very 1st song. The pick guard shattered. Which hopefully isn't too expensive to replace. Then during the last song we played our borrowed bass amp exploded (sorry Derrick!) and the guitar amp blew ( it works again!).

Day 2= Hangovers. A house party with w/ Dead Wife, Meat Curtains, ECT, Fuck Montreal (again this is the band's name - they hate our homeland). During the set we were silly stringed, the lights broke, I got hit so hard in the face with the mic that my eye turned red and blue and started pussing, eventually it got so violent that all of our stuff got knocked over and disconnected between every two riffs. We literally had to stop 6 times. We decided to try a really laid back Ronettes style song that we had never played live and only jammed once to chill people out. It turned out well and I just laid down and we jammed it forever as payback for all the violence. After the set the cops came by with nobody left in the place and no loud music they decided to turn their venom on us instead. I guess someone from the party had left a beer can on the roof of our van and they made Raf (who was completely sober) lay on the curb and touch his toes and say the alphabet backwards, follow a pen etc etc. They forced all of the band members from both bands to stay in the car. That was just the rush we needed to get the fuck out of Halifax. And we hit the road back to Montreal at 1am and drove all night.

Above are some pics from the house party we played in Ottawa a few weeks ago. Since then we have finished recording our SUNGLASSES 12" for Divorce. And we played with Human Eye(who are the most amazing live band on the planet) & also a fun show at Friendship Cove (which was filmed in HD by Tyr and will surface soon). I saw The Butthole Surfers, The Intelligence, Chain + The Gang, Holy Cobras, Golden Triangle, Thee Oh Sees, Induced Labor and millions more. Such a solid inter-provincial crew has formed between the cheezies in TO + the Bruised TongueCobras crew in Ottawa and the extended PLC family in MTL. Things have never been tighter, better organized or as much fun as right now.

Perfect time to spread some of that around and hit the road. Quebec City had to bail (but we'll come back soon) and PEI is the works(?). But HFX is set and should be a huge blowout: Poster by Lisa Czech

I forgot to post about this show because because we've been out of town. Ottawa was INSANE. One of the best parties I've ever been to in my entire life. I was crowd surfing during the last song and then Raf dove from behind the kit and we were both in the air at the same time. All the other bands were great. Everyone at Bruised Tongue and the Leaky Pipes did an excellent job! Toronto the next night was fun Uncle Mark took care of us and some shirts got torn.

Here is a blingee of Shub during a pool break in Toronto last month made by Lisa Czech.

Thanks to everyone who came out to Casa last night! We sold the place out completely! Magic Cheezies + Panopticon Eyelids + Leopard Et Moi were all excellent. Totally awesome night all around. Happy Birthday to Mike Farsky + Becky too. Loading gear Shub and I took turns between the back of Raf's motorcycle and Jessie Hicks' Jeep that was blasting Sisters of Mercy. Both are solid rides and we would sometimes meet up at intersections and own the road.

We recorded our 12" for Divorce a few days ago at The Pines with Graham Van Pelt & David Bryant. The rough mixes sound great. They have a really nice space. Plate reverb. Tape Machine. Etc..

Ottawa next (19th) then Toronto (20th).

Not only will this be the first show with Raf Katigbak on drums but our friend Cabral Jacobs is going to join us on saxophone. So it's going to be a set with two new members. Cabral is going to play on 1/2 of our 12" for Divorce and also on the 7" for Almost Ready. We've invited him to play as many dates as he wants with us.

Casa Del Popolo is one of our favorite places to play. And they haven't been able to have shows for the past few months due to some permit problems.. But they've done some renovations and now they are ready to re-open! So this is kind of a special night for all the reasons mentioned.

Okay so we just found out we are playing an awesome Pop Montreal festival show at Casa(which will be re-opened!) which I can't announce yet. I am excited also because we'll get artist passes and then I can go see Diamanda Galas, Butthole Surfers, Thee Oh Sees, Chain + The Gang, Faust, Teenage Jesus + The Jerks, Os Mutantaes, The Intellegence for free! Seriously the lineup for this year's festival is insane. Beyond amazing. And also we are headed back to Halifax (this time with Dead Wife) for Divorce Records showcase at the Halifax Pop Explosion festival. We are going to hit Quebec City again and maybe one other place (not Fredericton). And Toronto for a Wavelength Series show a few weeks before that. We'll have our first slab of vinyl ready for those shows.

All right it was a good run but the Grand Trine hideout/HQ/Jamspace/Studio living quarters affectionately known as Zee Cosmic Grotto is no more. We have moved all of our band's stuff to the Friendship Cove loft where we will be in good company. Now when we play a show there we can just wheel our gear from one room to another and then not worry about dragging it back to the Mile End. Brett Wagg of the upstart weed-core band Ultra Thin and also Campaign For Infinity will be sleeping with our gear in the jamspace full time.

Now we are going to get down to brass tacks and record a 7" and 12".

Becky from Dead Wife punched some touchy creepazoid in the face when they opened for Jay Reatard last week and spilled a lot of the dudes blood on her new Grand Trine tee. Super cool.

We got our good friend Christian Simmons to silkscreen up some xerox damaged crispy no-punk Grand Trine tee shirts. They are nice thin white shirts with lots of junk on them. Super cheap @ $10/per and this 1st batch is limited to 30 copies. They look cool and guarantee to avoid that thick ill fitting gross heavy shitty band shirt shit. 15-SMALL 15-MED. We will probably print more if it's raining dough.

Okay we did an interivew with Vice Quebec a few weeks ago and they just posted it online. It's translated from English to French so it's hard to gauge if we sound like assholes or not.

We are headed to Toronto in the next few days (I'm going up early to use my pass and catch Black Lips/Tyvek/party) we are playing Friday night @ The Silver Dollar w/ These Are Powers (one of the dudes who used to be in Liars band from Brooklyn). It's a pop montreal showcase thing. Come see my new un-rock and roll haircut.

We're getting evicted from our dream home/jamspace/studio at the end of the month! It was a good run and we'll miss this place. We couldn't find a suitable alternative HQ so are all going our separate ways and will just rent a room like a normal band. No more mc5/White Panther Party style commune fantasy lives. Thus marks the end of Grand Trine phase #1. It was a good solid first year of being a 24hr band. Our psychic link should remain intact even if we can't be roommates anymore.

Other news is that we are working on two new vinyl releases that will come out next. The first is part of the "World is Lousy With Ideas" series (Vol 8.5) which will be a split with Pink Noise and Celine on the Brooklyn label Almost Ready Records. Followed directly but a 12" e.p on one of the best Canadian labels going DIVORCE RECORDS.

After the NO MEANS NO show at the end of the month the next show in Montreal will be July 25th w/ Lovvers (United Kingdom) and Dead Wife (who I just saw destroy it opening for Mika Miko at Sala).

Grand Trine says they're not a cult, but they spend 24 hours a day together enacting their band rituals, their singer's grown his hair long and makes films about serpents, their drum kit is covered in various symbols and runes, and they took the audience on an amazing psychedelic punk journey, so I'm not entirely certain about this claim.

It's been great to see so many people coming out for so many different events this weekend, and everyone involved with organizing the festival deserves a huge congratulations for putting it on (and pulling it off so well). Not to deride the Pop Explosion, but I had more fun this weekend, and I think a growing contingent of music fans are looking forward to this festival more. - The Coast, Halifax, NS.

We ended up playing a secret show in a parking lot during the afternoon. Which was filmed from the roof so there might be some more of that popping up. It was our first time playing outside. Here are some photos:

Holy Cobras won't be playing the show at Green Room on the 8th. So it's just us and Angels in America (Ecstatic Peace! NYC/MTL). Then we are leaving for NXNE soon after. We just found out we will be doing 12" 45RPM LP on Divorce for the end of the Summer. Details soon. We just had French Vice in our apartment and we let them smoke cigarettes indoors. "Could you please tell me how selling psychedelic mushrooms in your youth has impacted the development of your current drumming style?" ha ha. It's going to be translated into French.

I did a guest-host radio show in Halifax on CKDU FM while I was there. I didn't write down the tracks list but it includes: PiL, Gentlemen of Horror, Cold Sun, Mort Garson, Pig, The Ether, Roxy Music, Iggy Pop, The Godz, The Rentals. You can listen to it if you want to hear these jams.

I haven't been to work in 2 weeks. Ouch. I don't know what I will be eating for the next few weeks. Beans & Rice. Zaatars. Tuborg.

We don't have any more copies of the tape left. Although the label/Ottawa should have some copies left. We were really happy with the job Bruised Tongue did. Their label has put out such a slew of great releases lately. Pierre was in town for a minute yesterday and dropped of new tapes by Fucked Corpse (in denim sleeve) and Totally Ripped- who I didn't see in Halifax but we saw many sunrises with. Gonna jam both of those out now. You can listen to a new interview with the Bruised Tongue label here.

Tour was A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. Black Feelings and Tyvek were great to travel with. The Obey Convention No.3 was a huge hit this year! Some have gone as far as to say that it officially dethroned the Halifax Pop Explosion as the year's best festival. Our secret show ended up being in a parking lot w. a Totally Ripped/Sex Negatives/Omon Ra super group. Quebec City ruled too! Marc from Celine threw an awesome party, we'll be back very soon! There are a million stories and things to post. But I just got home today and am a little tired. We sold 100% of our cut of the new tapes, so hit up the Holy Cobras when they come to town next month! Below is a track from our set last Saturday at the Khyber Ballroom.

I will just keep adding stuff in the next few days. I just wanted to say that we just got an invitation to play NXNE w. THESE ARE POWERS (ex-Liars) in Toronto June 19th. This time we will burn Toronto to the ground. I won't get drunk and start crying & puking either. You'll never break this heart of stone.

Before that we will be throwing our own show with our friends at Green Room w. Holy Cobras (Ottawa) and Angels in America (Ecstatic Peace! NYC/MTL) June 8th. And then at the end of the month we are playing Suoni w. NO MEANS NO at Sala. It's going to be a busy month!

I have been given the go ahead to post another track on the myspace from the new tape. 'DIAMOND BODY SUNRISE'. It should be up in the next few hours.

I haven't posted since the show last week with Aids Wolf and U.S Girls. It was a fun show although all of our gear was destroyed either before our after our set. Before our set a reverb head + amp channel+ bass guitar mysteriously broke, and then loading out a bass head was dropped and cracked. My shirt was torn a bit too. So now we are in the process of putting everything back together. We are going to put a new plug with grounding on the reverb head and we took apart my bass and replaced the input jack.

We have been working to upgrade our home recording studio for our next few releases. We are going to make a jump from recording on cassettes to recording on reels. So that's exciting and besides playing in Toronto at the end of the month with Ultra Thin we are basically taking this month to figure that out.

We are also going to work on a new set of largely new material to debut in Montreal so we might take a month off from playing live. We just confirmed that we are going to be opening for NO MEANS NO at Salla Rossa on June 25th for the Suoni il Popolo festival. Last year's festival began the day I moved here and I got to see Sun City Girls, Excepter and many other great shows. It is an excellent festival. This year Magik Markers, Jay Reatard, Mika Miko, Michael Gira (of SWANS!), Six Organs of Admittance and Chris Corsano! This plus warm weather will make June in Montreal the best month of the year. As for playing with No Means No, in high school I was in a band in Halifax when they came to town. I pretty much emailed the promoter of the show every day to try to get added to the bill (I was so annoying ha ha). I wasn't even old enough to go see them and I ended up having to sneak in. So anyway, being asked to open for them 5 years later is really cool. Keep your dreams!

I will probably post a preview of the artwork when Nicholas sends them our way. We love his artwork and are really happy to get to release something on his new label.

Oh it's confirmed we are playing with Nicholas' band Cosmetics & also Tyvek (Detroit) at the Obey Convention Vol. III in Halifax this year. Tyvek are exceptional live and on record. Definitely one of the best sets of last years Pop Montreal festival. Check them out for yourself!

Circulation of the Light, after the establishment of the spheres should be vivid, clear, and deep in the body as well as extended out form it. This can be done is phases, with the first phases working gently on the outside, forming broad bands of light, and increasing in density and power as they begin to reach deep below the surface of the tissue, to the bones themselves. This helps to anchor the power in the body, while expanding and clearing the aura. At all times, the energy should be palpable.

The Fountain of Light should move through the spinal column slowly at first, and with greater intensity and speed as experience progresses. The burst should be lively and bright, with a clear fluid like flame coursing around the edges of the expanded aura, at a radius of three to four feet on all sides. Lose your self in the flow of energy, as it passes through your body, out your head, into your feet, up your legs, purifying and energyzing as it goes.

At the conclusion of the exercise, you may withdraw the energy into the sub-epidermal layer of your body, feeling it strengthen and energize the tissue, sinking into the bones and purifying the marrow, an essential element in long life and strong bones. This should also be done along the spinal cord, imagining that the soft tissue between the vertebrae are packed with energy and the nerve connections are strong and vital.

The COOL FEST 2008 is an opportunity for enthusiasts of all kinds of music
to get a taste of the riches of the Montreal and North American music
scene they might not normally see. About 35 groups have united to
anticipate Winter Solstice, celebrating the darkest days of the year
with creativity in music and fun.

This event will be held at Montreal's most exciting new independent
venue, La Brique. Run by local musicians, the Ample collective, La Brique is an industrial loft whose tenants acquired the sound system from a local bar and have hosted musicians from around the world ever since in their vigorous concert schedule. For this show, La Brique is an all-ages, non-smoking family-compatible environment; they will be offering delicious vegetarian dishes and non-alcoholic beverages at affordable prices. Doors open at 5 PM each night. BYOB.

The event will also offer a large variety of work from the scene's rich
collection of micro record labels. CDs, cassettes, pro-press and home-cut
LPs carrying the work of fine musicians and other artworks, designed, decorated, packaged and promoted by these intrepid do-it-yourselfers will be on display and for sale.

Cool Fest is Dec 12-13-14 at La Brique, 6545 Durocher #402. Tickets are $10 per night, and $15 weekend passes are available for advance purchase, at local record stores and online through paypal at www.fluorescentfriends.org starting Saturday. Cool Fest is a benefit event for the Fluorescent Friends Musical Community Outreach Initiative, a program to bring music to disadvantaged youth.

Fluorescent Friends have been hosting concerts in Montreal for six
years. Before 2007's Cool Fest, their last major event, brought together the best in new Canadian and American underground music in a two day outdoor concert of music and performance arts, Earthunder. It featured Brooklyn jazz greats Mouthus, Rhode
Island drum and bass rock masters Lightning Bolt, New York's USAISAMONSTER, Mindflayer and Baltimore avant-gardists Nautical Almanac, as well as a healthy collection of local stars. Cool Fest promises to be even more intense.

In conjunction with the second installment of Cool Fest, Fluorescent Friends products division will be releasing Cool Fest 7, a CD compilation of performances from the 2007 fest. 24 tracks, 79 minutes, the recording is jam-packed with goodness and clocks in at a recession-proof FIVE BUCKS per copy if you buy one at this year's show.

Mouthus: The best jazz band on earth today, with the best drummer in New York City. All other jazz bands are "historic" or "museum" jazz... Mouthus bring a jazz made with acoustic and electronic drums, piezo shakers et al., and a buzz-saw earthquake lawn mower engine guitar that's as melodic as it is warmly metallic and gasoline-powered.... a fuzz suppository eminates from Mouthus' double-tube live rig. They have been playing for 6 years and have a new record coming out on Ecstatic Peace!, their second on that label. Other labels touting the band are Troubleman Unlimited, Load Records, Important Records... this band has them all COVERED

Metalux: Grand witches of the electronic age, these two performers have a long history flying their brooms on the frontiers of experimental music, and their earth shattering debut Fluorescent Towers on Hanson records (the imprint of the second member of Wolf Eyes Aaron Dilloway) crushed all previous records with sublime musical genius deftly. Each is doing edgy-as-hell solo work and together they are highly conductive. Albums out on Hanson, Load, Troubleman Unlimited, and 5RC (subsidiary of Kill Rock Stars). Virtuosic tabletop electronics and laying out some of the best effected vocal and straight guitar work out here today is what Metalux are known for. Catch them each solo on Saturday, and then joined on Sunday.

Disguises: A chaotic mess of dudeness with drums, feedback loops, delectable abstract bass playing, and a lead singer who plays all manner of sampler, guitar, synths, and looks like Ozzy Osbourne; the crisis always resolves into a really good buzz, as you might expect. From Toronto.

Zaimph & Mattin: Zaimph is Marcia Basset, member of GHQ, Hototogisu, Double Leopards, all-around classic sandy satin barefoot zen musical master out of New York City. She'll be doing a collaborative piece with feedback artist Mattin.
